Biography
Clyde Johnston was raised in High Point, North Carolina and studied Landscape Architecture at North Carolina State, then secured a coveted post with land planner and golf course designer Willard Byrd. During 13 years in the office, Johnston worked on dozens of assignments throughout the Southeast, including six years as director of the design shop. Finally, in March 1987, Johnston hung out his own shingle.
A decade later he presides over a burgeoning operation, with three full-time associates in the home bureau and a client list that stretches across the Southeast to the Midwest. Clyde has found it beneficial to collaborate with well-known golfers such as Fuzzy Zoeller and John Daly on design projects.
Beyond sound construction, excellent drainage, and good turf year-round, his projects all display his grasp of traditional design features. He tends to minimize mounds, preferring instead to develop contours with gentle shaping of the fairway and rough areas.
Design Philosophy
Clyde Johnston Designs, Inc. provides detailed plans, specifications and construction details and follows up during construction with timely site visits to insure the quality of the golf course product. This ability to provide detailed plans works well where sophisticated plan submissions and permits are required for construction. Our construction site visits are focused on the aesthetic interpretations of the construction plans and making sure the golf course fits the site in a natural manner.
Our design philosophy follows many of the time honored concepts of how the game of golf is played. Each new golf course is carefully designed to its own personality and to the needs of the client. The design style is reflected in the needs of the land, the environment, the players and the the owner. Shot values, playability, maintenance and attention to aesthetics are primary goals of our designs.
